Cashes are not profit

Every published tournament figure is a payout. It is the number the organiser handed over, before anything was taken off it. That makes it a real fact and a terrible measure of how anyone is doing.

What a payout does not include

• The buy-in for that event, and the buy-ins for every event that paid nothing.
• Staking. Many players sell pieces of themselves; a headline win can be mostly someone else's money.
• Travel, hotels, visas and the weeks that produced no result at all.
• Whatever the tax position turns out to be, wherever the player lives.

Read a figure in three steps

1. Ask what the number is: a single payout, or a total someone added up.
2. Ask what date it was true on, and whether the page says.
3. Subtract nothing, because you cannot. You do not have the buy-in history. Neither does this desk, which is why no totals appear here.

On tax, briefly and without advice

People often ask whether UK gambling winnings are taxed. HMRC's own guidance for its staff discusses when betting and gambling is not a trade, in the Business Income Manual at BIM22015. That is a pointer to the actual source, not tax advice, and this desk is not qualified to give any. Ask an accountant about your own position.

This is the reason there is no money list on this site. A ranking of gross payouts looks like a ranking of people, and it is not one.
